Hario V-60 Pour-Over Guide

Brew Like It’s 1999: The Hario V60 Pour-Over Guide

If you’re looking for a smooth, flavourful, and downright delicious cup of coffee, the Hario V60 pour-over is where it’s at. This method gives you full control over every brew variable, making it the Mac Daddy of brewing methods.

What You’ll Need:

  • Freshly roasted specialty coffee (20g – go big or go home)
  • A Hario V60 dripper (snag one here if you don’t have one!)
  • V60 filter (oh, that's over here if you need it)
  • Hot water (195-205°F, depending on your roast level)
  • Scale & timer
  • Your favourite mug

Let’s Get Brewing!

  1. Filter & Rinse: Place your filter in the V60 atop your mug, then rinse it with hot water to remove any papery taste and preheat your mug. (Because nobody wants a lukewarm brew.)
  2. Grind & Load: Grind 20g of coffee to a medium-fine consistency. Dump it into the filter and give it a gentle tap to level the bed.
  3. Bloom, Baby, Bloom: Tare your scale, start your timer, and pour 50-60g of hot water over the coffee. Let it bloom for 45 seconds—this wakes up the grounds and releases CO₂, making for a tastier cup.
  4. Second Pour: At 0:45, add another 140-150g of water for a total of 200g. Give it a swirl to evenly saturate the grounds or let it do its thing.
  5. Final Pour: At 1:15, add more water until you hit 330g total. Let it drain.
  6. Sip & Enjoy: Once the water has fully drained (around 2:30-3:00 total time), give it a stir, take a sip, and pat yourself on the back. You just brewed an epic cup of specialty coffee.
